Since my favorite time of the year, hunting season, is just around the corner I was telling my son a hunting story the other day and made me think I should probably write a blog about it. No, no it won’t be about the big one that got away or if only I could have gotten a little closer as it usually goes for me. Actually it was about a pretty common thing – Fog.
Several years ago I was hunting in West Virginia on farm land next to ours that I know like the back of my hand. Remote, cellphones don’t work there, and quiet. The area is near the top of mountain and with higher elevation, weather changes a lot. I remember sitting on a log and in the distance saw a fog bank rolling in. At first I thought it was neat to see the weather roll in from a distance. But within a few minutes I found myself engulfed in that rolling fog bank. The path I had hiked in on was no where to be seen. The trees and brush around me looked more like figures out of a horror movie. While I knew where I was more or less, there was a lot of moments of fear and a little panic that I might stumble around and end up lost in the middle of nowhere. Who was I going to call for help? How would anyone find me?
But that’s how life is isn’t it? Sometimes we’re hiking along our journey in bright sunshine and then seemingly out of the blue there it is – a fog bank! Maybe it’s one of life’s events that slow us down or make us stop completely. Cancer, job loss, death of a loved one, a global pandemic! All pretty thick fog if you ask me. We often don’t knew who to call for rescue or maybe we struggle with letting folks know where we are mentally and emotionally so they can help “rescue” us.
But there’s some good news. See, we were already traveling down a path just like I was hiking an old cattle path that day. As a Believer, we can trust that God has that life path all planned out, even when we can’t see the next steps. Even better, what’s the best thing you can see when you’re in a thick fog? That’s right, sun light breaking through!
You don’t even need me to tell you the analogy there. The relief of seeing the sun breaking through the fog points us back to the SON and reminds us that the fog we are experiencing just can’t stand up to the SON light!
Of course I made it out of the woods that day, still in one piece and with a couple of squirrels my Grandma fixed for supper, but with a good reminder of how quickly life’s journey changes. I know I sure have been in some pretty dense fog lately and have even lost my way a bit in the last few weeks. If you find yourself in some Fog today look for the SON light – best fog lights you will ever have!
Great word for us today. The Son always shines through and breaks up the fog. Thank you Russ for sharing.

Russ, Love this post. Reminds me of the five years we lived near Charleston, WV and frequently dealt with fog in the hills and hollers that would cause 20 car pile-ups on the highway. We also dealt with limited vision of the future when my husband lost his job because the company sold his division. We had two young children, no family support and no idea where we would land. But God. God had it all planned out and that painful move took us from wild and wonderful WV to warm and sunny NC. Not much fog here.

Hey Russ, as always you are spot on. Seems we have to be experts at navigating through fog in these trying times if we are to survive. So does this make us experts? For me definitely not. I have to admit that in times such as these I am reminded that no matter what, God is in control. Something I find myself saying more often is \”Jesus take the wheel\” and most often I end up wishing I had said that a little than I actually did. It's that let go and let God mentality that I try to adhere to but often find myself struggling with. As much as I enjoy the sun I do my best growing while while weathering the storm. Thank goodness for the Son.
