Tricky thing – seeds are. If you know anything about me then you know I’m an avid vegetable gardener, obsess over it even. I plan time off work to plant, rearrange things to harvest, can and freeze. All that work has sure come in handy in our current COVID 19 world.
I planted most of this year’s garden a week or so ago. We’re supposed to get lots of rain as I write this and I began worrying that the seeds may rot and not germinate with too much water. Got me to thinking about those seeds.
Seeds are the remains of a previous plant’s work. They are usually small. Ever try to plant Lettuce seeds? They require lots of work to grow and produce another plant. When the seeds grow they produce fruit and ultimately pass on seeds for the next plant to start all over again.
We talk about it all the time – planting seeds in our lives and relationships. We invest in our children, families and friends and hope to watch those people and relationships grow much like my garden. Sometimes it may take a while to see progress but what a cool feeling when you see sprouts from your planted seeds!
Remember what I said about seeds though? They are the remains of another plant’s work. You don’t plant a pepper seed and hope for cucumbers. And they require work. Just the right amount of sun, water, etc. or they never become what they are supposed to be.
What kind of seeds are you planting? If you struggle with things missing in your life like kindness, patience, giving, etc. the relationship seeds you plant will be missing those things too. If you don’t put the time and care in your relationships with friends and family, that relationship won’t form and grow into what it was meant to be.
We could talk about the analogies with seeds forever. For today, just think of what you’re planting in those around you and the care you give those seeds. Fruitful plants and trees are what we all need in our lives. Remember Jesus said with faith just the size of a mustard seed we can move mountains.
